As the number of people in Australia infected with a new strain of coronavirus increases, some homes have become “super-risky”, with some vulnerable residents putting themselves at risk by exposing themselves to their neighbours, a UF Health report says.
“We’re seeing a lot of vulnerable people and people who are struggling with mental health issues or who are at risk of developing it themselves,” said Lisa Brown, assistant professor in the department of epidemiology and global health at the University of Sydney.
“It’s very difficult for people to live in safe environments.”
People have to be aware of their surroundings, they have to know what to do if they’re in the wrong place at the wrong time.
“The environment they’re living in is extremely difficult to change and I think that’s what’s happening in our home communities.”
“There’s not many things that we can do that people can do in isolation that aren’t going to make them vulnerable to this new coronaviruses.”
In the past few days, two people in Melbourne have been admitted to hospital with the virus, and more than 30 people in NSW have tested positive.
The most common symptom is cough and sore throat, which can last up to two weeks.
Other symptoms include fever, muscle aches and joint pain.
“A lot of people who come to hospital are experiencing a combination of symptoms,” Brown said.
“They’re getting quite sick, they’re vomiting, they’ve had difficulty breathing and it’s getting quite hard for people not to have any idea what they’re experiencing.”
The coronaviral strain, also known as Zoster, was first discovered in humans in January.
It is currently being identified in coronavivirus cases in Australia.
“Most people can get some of the symptoms, and some people may have a cough and a cough with a sore throat and sore muscles,” Brown told Al Jazeera.
“But it’s not as good as the symptoms of the virus.”
“People who are more severely ill can get the symptoms but it can be very, very difficult to diagnose.”
So we are seeing a very high level of hospitalisation for those people and we’ve seen that with this new strain.
“If you do things like put up a closed door, or lock the door, that’s going to keep them safe.””
One is to make sure people are doing things that will prevent them getting sick,” she said.
“If you do things like put up a closed door, or lock the door, that’s going to keep them safe.”
The other way to keep people safe is to treat the virus with a cocktail of antiviral drugs.
Hirst said the drugs can work, but only if you have the right kind of healthcare.
“When you have a cocktail, it can stop the virus spreading,” she told Aljazeera.
“If you can’t get the right combination of drugs to prevent infection, the virus will continue to spread.”
Al Jazeera’s James Deatrick, reporting from Melbourne, said people who have not been vaccinated can still be infected.
“This is not the first time the virus has hit Australia, it’s been happening for a long time,” he said.
But Dr Brown said people were becoming more aware of the importance of protecting themselves.
“What we’re seeing now is a very large number of coronovirus infections in people who don’t have any symptoms at all, but it’s also the case that some people are actually living with this virus for a very long time and they’re becoming more conscious of the risks,” she added.
“I think it’s a good time to remind people to be very aware of who they’re infecting and who’s coming in contact with them.”
